Homelessness Research Project @ The Zone

25th January 2012
Homelessness Research Project @ The Zone

Are you aged 16 - 18 and have experience of homelessness? Take part in a homelessness research project @ The Zone

"My name is Sai Lee. I am a student at Plymouth University and I wish to interview young people aged 16-18 about their experiences of homelessness. I am keen to find out what homelessness means to young people and how they make sense of it.

Young people will be asked about their personal life experience and will focus on what has happened in the past and what is going on now. Interviews are expected to last around 60 minutes and a voice recorder will be used to get an accurate record of them.

Young people are able to stop the interview at any time and if necessary, withdraw their information at any time. Following the study, young people can also speak to a youth support worker. The information collected will be treated in the strictest confidence and any identifying information will be removed to protect your identity - a false name will be used in the research findings."

A £10 gift voucher will be given to those who take part. Travel expenses (up to £5) will also be refunded.

if you would like to take part please come in to The Zone or email: homelessinplymouth@gmail.com

The sexual health service at The Zone has successfully been awarded the new ‘SAFE’ badge quality standard. We are the first service in the city to be awarded the standard.

The Zone Achieves The Information Standard Certificate

The Zone has been certified as a provider of high quality health and social care information by The Information Standard scheme. The Zone met the scheme criteria of producing safe and reliable health and social care information and we have consequently been awarded The Information Standard quality mark, which we can display on our literature and website to illustrate to the public that our information can be trusted.

According to a survey carried out by The Information Standard[1], the majority of the general public (72%) believe that they would be better able to manage their own and their family’s health if they had quick and easy access to health information they could trust. The Information Standard, which is supported by the Department of Health, was launched to provide this kind of assurance.

Angela Coulter PhD, Hon FFPH, Hon FRCGP, an independent healthcare analyst who advises on the scheme, commented: “Organisations that become certified members of the scheme, and therefore display The Information Standard quality mark on their health information or social care materials, have proven that they adhere to the very highest standards of information production. The public can feel confident that if they see The Information Standard quality mark on health and social care websites or leaflets then the information can be trusted and relied upon.”

Mike Jelly, Acting Chief Executive said of its certification : “It is excellent to have achieved this standard, which recognises the high quality of professionalism within The Zone in producing clear coherent and accessible information to its clients and their families.

Thanks are particularly due to Emma Marriott for the considerable amount of work she contributed to gaining this award’”

[1] Results taken from a survey, conducted on behalf of The Information Standard scheme of 2100 people in England in November 2010.

Mount Wise Building Devonport Launch day on the 10th July

Building Devonport

Mount Wise Youth Project, The Zone, have been awarded funding from Heritage Lottery Fund to initially start a year long project focusing on the post war regeneration and the recent 10 year regeneration by Devonport Regeneration Company Partnership (DRCP). This project is in partnership with Plymouth City Council and FotoNow. The initial idea for the project came from the young members of Devonport Youth Forum. The young people identified that although Devonport is renowned for having a fantastic community spirit, there were not enough opportunities for intergenerational work within in the community. A distinct common link was established. Generations, young and old have been through a regeneration process – a perfect common ground for community members to work together!

The aims of ‘Building Devonport’ are to bridge the gap between community members while absorbing the legendary history and heritage of Devonport, Plymouth. This year long project is going to give young people the opportunity to participate in a fun and innovative project focusing on heritage and media. Throughout the project the young people will get the chance to be involved in lots of trips and activities. During the project young people will have the opportunity to improve their life skills, access to employment and education by gaining various accreditations in filming and photography, art and design, oral interviewing techniques, leadership, teamwork and much more!

The Launch Day for ‘Building Devonport’ is on Sunday 10th July 2011, at Devonport Guildhall between 12pm and 3pm, families welcome. There will be free cream teas and BBQ food available for all who attend, with a bouncy castle and Disney characters for the younger children.

We are now recruiting young people to lead and be apart of the project, we also require any other community members who are interested in sharing their experiences of Devonport regeneration. If you would like further information regarding this project please come along to our Launch Day or contact Mount Wise Youth Project on (01752)606595.
